Quick questions now and then panel later?
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
16:51
(Is that the model, Bob? Everyone is presenting now for up to 10 minutes and then there will be a panel discussion?)

Hi Grace! How long did it take you to get established enough at Cal Poly to move your time/energy/resources to start working on big projects with students?
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
28:33
Yes, love it @Grace
Aubrie Adams
29:57
And follow up question! Did you have to do any kind of adjustment to align student interests with your own research agenda? Or did you let student interests drive new research agendas for you?
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
30:11
great!
Aubrie Adams
30:21
We can chat later too since we're moving on :)
Grace Yeh (she/hers), Ethnic Studies
32:33
I think it was more merging of my interests (in stories and in challenging the lack of knowledge of Asian American communities) and community interests. The alignment with student interests came with teaching largely GE students and helping them understand how what we were learning was relevant. Thanks for the Qs Brie!!!
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
34:35
Yes! We will get it the next time!
Aubrie Adams
42:40
Do you have recommendations for recruiting research assistants when they are just getting started at Cal Poly? Right now, I teach primarily upper-division courses and by the time I meet students interested in research, they are just about out the door!
Emily Taylor
43:48
Aubrie you could ask colleagues teaching introductory level courses to recommend students
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
43:49
Hi Aubrie! Please reach out to the Office of Student Research! I would be happy to develop a plan with you! (And of course Anurag and other panelists will have great things to share!)
Ben Hawkins
43:56
PostDoc idea seems great. Glad to hear it was successful. Where, relative to tenure, did you find success in publication and grant funding?
Anurag Pande
46:26
I always reach out to instructors (in data science) and have them recommend good students
Anurag Pande

Q. PostDoc idea seems great. Glad to hear it was successful. Where, relative to tenure, did you find success in publication and grant funding? ###For me I got my first NSF right after I got in, so I got really lucky but it has been all downhill at least as far as NSF is concerned. So I was getting little projects right from the start but submitting the five large USDOT proposal happened 2 years in as Associate Professor.

I will just add that for me the most important thing to learn about budgets was to fund other people (both admin coordinator/manager staff and other researchers) … I did not do that when I first started applying.
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
01:08:40
Yes! Please join us for that interactive workshop facilitated by me & Elizabeth Lowham!
Jane Lehr (she/hers)

Yes, #Nearpeer mentoring works!
Aubrie Adams
01:15:24
Probably a weird question, but does the department or lab pay for things like lab t-shirts?
Philip Costanzo
01:16:24
Personally, I use my professional development funds to pay for shirts and social activities.
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
01:26:47
Some people also talk about what Kirsten is describing as part of a “research group syllabus” or “lab syllabus” - and might also include how DEI is centered in the research groups, etc.
Anurag Pande
01:32:05
Research Group Syllabus...great idea, Jane!
ceng@calpoly.edu
01:34:32
Thanks Phil!
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
01:34:40

01:39:50
Thanks Anurag!
Jane Lehr (she/hers)

Please do not delay your sabbatical by 5 years … do not be like me! (It delays your access to sabbatical for the rest of your career ....)
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
01:44:55
All, please reach out to Trish Brock, Interim Director of Research Compliance … in that new role, I believe that the Division of Research, Economic Development & Grad Education can now provide some more support … and, if not, please get your support requests on her/our list.
Jane Lehr (she/hers)

re: safety training, etc.
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
01:48:37
SURP = Summer Undergraduate Research Program. 3 colleges have this program. In an ideal world, all colleges will and I am hoping we can move closer to this aspiration.
Ben Hawkins
01:49:50
was the challenge with the postdoc due to the individual or the administrative aspects?
ceng@calpoly.edu
01:51:15
Great question Ben - bring that back up at 2:15!
Jane Lehr (she/hers)
